The time of year has come to open up your windows and let in some fresh air while it's not sweltering hot or annoyingly cold! The wind is blowing, the air smells of campfires, and you can finally bring out that new sweatshirt you bought over the summer. Nothing gets better than fall. In this new season, it's time to head outside with a book to take in this beautiful fall weather! This article suggests several books and novels that fit your fall aesthetic and allow you to take a break from college homework.

Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw

For all spooky lovers, this novella is perfect for the upcoming Halloween season! Set in Japan, a group of Americans explores a notorious haunted house seeped in Japanese folklore. As the group investigates, the house begins to physically and mentally hold them captive. This novella has many twists and turns and is a hauntingly confusing experience. I recommend this book if you are a fan of authors like Stephen King.

Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy

For fans of literary fiction, this novel encapsulates the fall aesthetic through its imagery of the wilderness. The novel takes place in Scotland, which is intriguing enough. Inti's narrator is trying to reintroduce wolves to the local area where they once roamed free. This new place, however, brings about old traumas as a series of murders pops up. This novel may contain triggering information. Please look up specific trigger warnings before reading.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

Another novel that captures Fall vibes, The Invisible Life follows a girl who wishes to live forever. Except, there's one catch: no one will remember her. Making this deal with one of the gods that she was warned not to pray to after dark, this novel takes place through decades. It begins in 1700s France and spans through today. One day, someone in a random book shop remembers her. If you enjoy historical fiction and romance, this book is for you!

House of Leaves by Mark. Z. Danielewski

Calling all the horror lovers! This novel is a unique one. The story occurs through artifacts like documents, photographs, transcripts of recordings, footnotes, instructions, and many more odd things. All this centers around the idea of this house, which may or may not be real. We follow multiple narrators as they come into contact with this idea of the house. Already off- putting because of its narrative style, this novel is just as confusing as it is creepy.

To Make Monsters Out of Girls by Amanda Lovelace

This one is perfect for readers drawn to verse rather than prose. This collection of poetry focuses on women and their experiences. The imagery is what makes it the perfect fall vibe. If you enjoy this book, follow up with its sequel To Drink Coffee with a Ghost. This whole series is sure to fit the Fall aesthetic.

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

This novel is sure to be fall-like with its dark academic aesthetic. Perfect for the college experience, the story follows our narrator just getting out of jail. The whole novel is about why he ended up in jail. This novel is particularly memorable, filled with theater, Shakespeare, and murder. Make sure to bring tissues!

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

A precursor for If We Were Villains, this novel is essential for dark academia lovers. Following a group of classics students at a university, this novel shows the emotional depth murder has on human beings. Instead of figuring out who committed the murder, we are trying to figure out just why they did it. It is considered the first of its kind as an "inverted detective" story. Perfect for cool weather and moral decisions, this novel is one that you cannot forget!
